Background to the Mortimers Herd

Started as a hobby in 1979 – buying and rearing calves, it soon became obvious that the Charolais cross calves quickly outgrew other crosses and so in 1982 we decided to purchase our first pedigree cattle and THE MORTIMERS CHAROLAIS HERD was formed.

Our foundation stock and any subsequent purchases have been selected from well proven bloodlines at dispersal, private sales and some French Imports.

We favour quality over quantity and our breeding objective has been to produce quality females and bulls for Pedigree Herds and the Commercial Farmer, focusing on growth rates, conformation, ease of calving, milk and temperament, culling animals that do not  fit that criteria.

The herd now numbers 50 – 55 breeding females plus followers, amounting in total 150 – 160 head.

Males and females are sold in February and October at the Perth Bull Sales,(Scotland) some at Carlisle and some privately direct from the farm.

Cattle are weight recorded from 100 to 500 days, and back scanned for eye muscle depth, we also have a high health status.   The herd is vaccinated for BVD & Lepto and completed a routine TB & Brucellosis Test on 26 February 2004.

Stock bulls and AI are used on selected females, current stock bulls are Cleffany Spitfire (purchased Perth Bull Sales for 12000gns) calves now on the ground look promising, we are also lucky enough to be able to use Mortimers Russia – owned by Coniningsby Charolais Herd, this bull was sold in 2002 after we had used him as stock sire at Mortimers, we were so pleased with his progeny that we have had him back to the farm to run with selected females.  We also have offspring by Mortimers Riddle – now owned by the Webb family, Riddle was shown successfully as a 2 year old bull when he was at Mortimers and since leaving here to go to Rushfield has won the Charolais bull of the year for the Webbs.

We grow a small amount of barley as a feed crop and make hay and silage, as our ground is mainly clay the cattle are housed for part of the winter.

Mortimers cattle are regularly exhibited at National, County & Local Agricultural Shows, we have had considerable success in all age groups, with one of the most memorable being Supreme Champion at The Royal Highland & Royal Show in 1998 with MOWBRAYPARK GIGI,  Gigi  was purchased in 1993 for 16,000gns at the Carlisle Christmas Cracker as an in calf heifer, Yes it does sound a lot of money but she has been a  sound investment for the herd and is still a fit, healthy looking cow for her age.

Proving that the right investment in quality stock can pay in the long term.

We are extremely proud of our cattle and welcome visitors to the farm to view the whole herd and see for themselves the quality of the young bulls and heifers we have available for sale.
